The United Dutch East India Company (Dutch: Verenigde Ostindische Compagnie) abbreviated as VOC, commonly known as The Dutch East India Company.
Established in 1602. It was granted a 21 year monopoly to carry out trade activities in Asia. The company had the power to wage war, imprison and execute convicts, negotiate treaties, strike its own coins and establish colonies. It was considered to be the world's first multi national corporation.
Through most of the 17th century it was a highly successful trading company but by the latter part of the 18th century it was weighed down by smuggling, corruption and growing administrative costs. The company went into bankruptcy and was formally dissolved in 1799.
In its day it was probably the most important Company on the globe.
