A Victorian Irish Bog Wood mourning cross pendant carved with Ivy leaves and berries. In mourning jewellery the Ivy represents the sentiment 'I cling to thee'. Bog Wood is the product of forest timbers, often Pine, Oak or Yew being preserved in Black Peat for thousands of years. When Queen Victoria went into mourning after the death of Prince Albert in 1861, a fashion for black jewellery started and continued until the Queen's death in 1901.
